Psalm 51

Intro

David is reputed as a man after God’s own heart. It would seem strange that such a person will be in such a position.

The best of us at some point will be and have been in a place where we need to get right with God.

David is King of Israel, called of God, successful in battle against the enemies of his nation and of the Lord but loses his own battle for his soul.

Challenges do not discriminate.

The word of God and the mission of Christ is all about restoration.

The church has done a poor job at restoration because it has seldom been the objective of discipline.

God expects us to embrace the fallen and nurse wounded soldiers back to battle readiness.

Galatians 6:1 KJVS Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

David knows the human judgment and execution he would face from people so he goes to the only person who will judge him justly and extend mercy.

2 Samuel 24:14 KJVS And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

The encouragement from David’s episode:

Regardless of who you are sin has traps set for you.
Regardless of how far you’ve fallen God can restore you.

David gives us a road map to find our way back to God. He knew how to find the heart of God and he gives us the pathway.

1. The acknowledgment of a personal need. Vs 1

What I do not acknowledge cannot be corrected.

We cannot pretend it doesn’t exist and expect it to become a reality.

Psalm 51:3 KJVS For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

2. The acceptance of a present sin. Vs 2-5

This is not the prayer of a person who is comfortable is a sinful lifestyle.

This is a person who detests his current condition and desires to be right with God.

“It is when we notice the dirt, that God is most present in us” CS Lewis

Romans 7:19 KJVS For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

3. The appreciation of the purity required. Vs 6-8

God dwells in truth and everything is exposed in His presence

God’s purging rids our innermost being of every carnal trace

God’s washing rids us of the stains of our sins and renders us spotless

4. The approach of a penitent soul. Vs 10-12

Create - A desire to have a heart that is new and freshly designed.

Renew - A desire to regain a condition that once existed.

Restore - a desire to replace a commodity that has been lost.

5. The actions of a purged individual. Vs 13

A direction result of your restoration is my commitment to encourage others to experience you.

Conclusion

What’s your condition?

Backslidden?

Jeremiah 3:14-15 KJVS Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion: [15] And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

Rebellion?

Luke 15:18-20 KJVS I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, [19] And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. [20] And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

Hurt?

Psalm 147:3 KJVS He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

Sinned and feeling condemned?

John 8:11,15 KJVS She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. [15] Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
