Hebrews 11
This chapter serves as a reference for our lives as we seek to walk by faith.
The Lord is so gracious that He didn’t leave faith for us as a concept or a definition that we would figure it out as we go but, He actually furnished us with these examples from whose lives we can extract lessons.
There is no other way for us to live, but by faith.
Faith is life for the believer.
Romans 1:17 “The just shall live by faith”
Hebrews 10:38 KJV Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
In this life faith is not an option but it’s a requirement.
How do we get faith?
Romans 10:17 KJV So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
In chapter 11 we can establish a few realities of Faith:
1. Faith is proven by works
2. Trust does not require perfection
3. Hardships are a part of our Faith experience
4. We are a part of a living legacy of faith
5. Embrace our own journey of faith
Hebrews 11:4 KJV By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
In order to understand the power of Abel’s faith we must seek to appreciate first that the outcome of his faith is in contradiction to the expectation of him as his name suggests.
His name means “vapor” which suggests something that quickly disappears and has no real substance to it.
Interestingly in keeping with his name his life was not a long one as compared to the others who lived into old age, but his faith outlived him.
Lessons on Faith from the life of Abel
1. Faith initiates worship. Genesis 4, Hebrew 11:6
2. Faith is tested by sacrifice. Romans 12:1
3. Faith is proven by obedience.
4. Faith is personally demonstrated. Genesis 4:4
5. Faith attracts the attention and approval of God. Vs 4
6. Faith speaks when we are silenced. Hebrews 11:4
