MOTHERS OF FAITH

Bishop Dr. Eric Peters

2 Timothy 1:1-5 KJV  [1] Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, [2] To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. [3] I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; [4] Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; [5] When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

Paul is in prison and in this difficult time of his life he is writing to his spiritual son Timothy, providing ministerial instructions but begins by establishing his confidence in this young man.

We get a peak through Paul’s introduction as to the reason he has placed such great responsibility on this young man.

Timothy is now a young pastor who is now leading churches and establishing systems of governance within the Lord’s church and his spiritual father is affirming him.

The affirmation begins not with Timothy but goes beyond the person of Timothy to the parenting and the environment that produced him.

His words seem to highlight a few motivations:

  • Acknowledgment of Timothy’s value to him

  • Acknowledgment of Timothy’s forming.

  • Acknowledgment that Faith has a generational quality

He is establishing the impact of mothers of faith on the life of an individual and its consequent impact on the body of Christ.

The inference is that you did he just appear on the scene but he was birthed through a process of faith development.

Your life and manner causes credit to go beyond you but to who birthed you.

Conclusion

It seems strange that Paul would deviate from the business of ministry to highlight this reality in the life of this young man but he is acknowledging key elements that we many times forget.

  • How is your faith making generational impact?

  • What are we depositing today for future dividends?

  • How is your deposit impacting the kingdom?
