The Rise to Excellence Continues

2026-08-23 The Rise to Excellence Continues (1)

Today we honor the chosen theme and seek to hear what God has to say to us from His word about it.

Excellence is not a word to define but an ideal to be pursued.

There are some innate qualities and attributes of humanity that seem to connect and resonate in our spirit.

We naturally crave justice, love, peace, and goodness and when we find it there is a natural tendency to embrace it.

Excellence is similar to those. We may function in our own ways until we are exposed to a higher ideal that never leaves us the same.

Excellence is more caught than taught.

Excellence is an ideal that is progressively translated from a thought and manifests in a consistent behavior that yields discernible results.

Martin Luther King Jr “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, “here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well”.

By this quote excellence is individually appropriated but communally administered.

  1. The Honor of Excellence

Psalm 8:3-5 KJVS When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; [4] What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? [5] For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

  • An acceptance of the work of the creator

  • An acknowledgment of the standards of the creator

  • An attraction of the complexities of creation

  • An appeal of the consistency of creation

  • An appreciation of the worth of those who benefit from our service

  • An aptitude to the reflecting of my nature in my service.

  1. The Hindrances to Excellence

Zephaniah 1:12 NIV At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’

  • An attitude that does not seek for the best.

  • An attitude that feels contented with what is and never consider what can be.

  • An Acceptance of a particular position without a thought there there’s better.

  • An aversion to anything new and explorative.

  • An inclination to maintain tradition.

  1. The Hope of Excellence

The Excellency of Christ

John 3:16 NIV For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

  • The source of the Father’s gift

  • The standard of the Father’s gift

  • The sufficiency of the Father’s gift

  • The satisfaction of the Father’s gift

Conclusion

2 Corinthians 4:7 KJVS  But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

The meaning of excellency here speaks to a throwing beyond or metaphorically supremacy.

Paul is submitting to us that:

  1. Our conditions do not determine our value.

  2. Our value is determined by the treasure we carry

  3. What I am positioned to achieve and demonstrate is not based on my standard but His.
