2 Timothy 3:1-5 NKJV But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: [2] For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, [3] unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, [4] traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, [5] having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

2 Timothy 4:1-5 NKJV I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: [2] Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. [3] For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; [4] and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. [5] But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

The times that we are living in must not catch us by surprise, as the Lord took the time in His word to inform us of the various types of issues we will be faced with, so that we can be prepared.

Paul’s address of perilous times in our introductory text would have been thought of just the season of human existence will be impacted by a particular age or time. But he qualifies it and makes it specific that the perilous nature of the times is because of the wickedness of men.

The challenges he listed are not weather patterns, political issues or economic challenges but they are completely a human issue.

The disturbing aspect of this global phenomenon is the fact that there will be a perceived spirituality accompanying such wickedness.

Paul describes the godliness that prevails as a form.

The Greek word speaks to the shape or semblance of but lacking the capacity to function as.

... denying the power.

It speaks to having an objection to the energy, influence or life that will empower the thing.

There is a power that is inherent to a godly life there is an absence of it, rendering the form dead.

It speaks to

a desire to associate but not assimilate. A desire to identify with but not be inducted into.

These characteristics are untenable for any Bible believing, blood washed, spirit filled child of God to condone or tolerate.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 KJVS Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? [15] And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? [16] And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. [17] Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, [18] And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Paul was warning against what is called Syncretism.

Definition of Syncretism

The blending of religious belief systems into a new system, or the incorporation of other beliefs into an existing religious tradition.

Example is the blending of:

• Christians with African religious practices and beliefs creating a hybrid.

• Christians involved in palm reading

• Christians involved in horoscopes

• Christians involved in secret societies and fraternities

• Christians using mediums like garlic in purses

• Christians having faith in oils

In effect we practice counterfeit Christianity. Looks like it but lacks the power needed to make it effective.

The only source of life and power in the church is Christ through His representative Holy Spirit in the earth.

1. Counterfeit Christianity: Abuse Gifts. 1 Corinthians 12

• The focus on gifts and not character

• The attraction of persons to manifestations rather than relationship

• The adoption of a dependence on personalities

2. Counterfeit Christianity: Abuse Grace

The removal or destruction of long held standards and parameters.

Proverbs 22:28 NKJV “Do not remove the ancient landmark Which your fathers have set.”

• The rejection of the fathers of the faith

• The reliance on forgiveness and mercy rather than the desire to refrain from sin. Romans 6:1&2

3. Counterfeit Christianity: Abuse Giving

2 Corinthians 8:13-15 NKJV “For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened; [14] but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may supply their lack, that their abundance also may supply your lack-that there may be equality. [15] As it is written, "He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack."

• The materialistic mindset of the leadership

• The materialistic desires of the membership

• The reliance on materialism as a means of personal satisfaction

Conclusion

• True Christianity is built on faith in Christ alone.

The Consequences of Separation - Disconnected from God Genesis 36-21

Genesis 3:6-21 NKJV Gen 3:6  So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 

Gen 3:7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. 

Gen 3:8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 

Gen 3:9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?" 

Gen 3:10 So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself." 

Gen 3:11 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?" 

Gen 3:12 Then the man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate." 

Gen 3:13 And the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." 

Gen 3:14 So the LORD God said to the serpent: "Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel." 

Gen 3:16 To the woman He said: "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you." 

Gen 3:17 Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. 

Gen 3:18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. 

Gen 3:19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return." 

Gen 3:20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 

Gen 3:21 Also for Adam and his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

Main Points:

• Mankind is susceptible to Deceit due to desire or need

• Separation from God is the cause of all Sin (we miss the mark)

• This Separation creates, fear, Loss, insecurity etc.

• Our connection to God is our source of all dominion over circumstances

• Our connection to God helps us see ourselves and our God from the right perspective

• To truly express God we must, think, feel and act as He does

• We were created as an expression of His Nature and ability

• We are Temples of God Designed to Host His Mind, His Love and execute His will

• The best way to Know God is through His word and Prayer

The Power of Desire and Deception

Consequences (We are influenced by what we see and hear)

• Our external experience can shape our views, thoughts, desires and actions

• Once we believe in them , we share those views and actions

• Deception is only effective if it is appealing. It suggests it will meet a need, a desire or a hope

• 
  

The Loss of Innocence; The Loss of Relationship

(We can suffer because of our choices)  

7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [b]coverings.

• Our actions have impact; all causes have repercussions or consequences

• Once what you believe is deception you suffer loss

• They loss spiritual connection to God through their choice to give into desire

• They could now not handle their nakedness

• The power of the Body, became stronger than the power of their Spiritual Connection to God

A Consequence of Separation; Fear

(Fear can be fueled by our disconnection from God) 

8 And they heard the [c]sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the [d]cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

• No longer connected to God in Spirit. They feared His Presence

• The Fall, caused us to no longer desire to be with God and to naturally run from His Presence

• Change our conception of Connection. We need relationship with God if we are not to struggle isolation, love gives spiritual security

A Consequence of Separation; Awareness of Limitation

(Concepts of insufficiency)  

9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

• They no longer saw themselves as adequate, as acceptable in his presence

• All concepts of lack, separation, inadequacy are a result of disconnection from God

• Change our conception of Awareness. We need to realize that if we don’t see things how God sees them we will invariably live out destructive concepts of self, God and Life

A Consequence of Separation; Self Consciousness

(independence & irresponsibility)  

11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?” 12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.” 13  And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

• They thought independent of God

• The now had their own perception of themselves and not just God’s Perception of Them

• How do you see yourself?

• How do you see God?

• Change our conception of independence. We need to depend on God. Obedience is a sign of Dependence_ reliance and trust.

A Consequence of Separation; Loss of Harmony

(discord in creation)

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

• Curses enters Creation

• Enmity and strife between living things

• Divine order and balance is disrupted

• Embrace God’s Concept of Harmony. God is about unity, alignment and one accord because it averts any loss, damage and conflict that results from separation.

A Consequence of Separation; Pain and Suffering

(a loss of wellbeing)

16 To the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be [e]for your husband, And he shall rule over you.”

• To create life now takes effort and struggle

• Relationships are now more hierarchical

• Embrace God’s Concept Equality, Mutual care and Service. Most pain and suffering is engendered by separation, neglect, disrespect, selfishness etc. God call us to service and sacrifice so that wellbeing can be had by all

A Consequence of Separation; Toil, Struggle and Death

(a loss of Harmony, Rest and Peace)

17  Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it. • Disconnection from God is the Cause of the whole Process of Sin and Death

• God is actually the only True and Pure source of Life

• Embrace God as Source. No other source but God is pure, abundant and all truistic. All greed and strife and despair comes from viewing other or circumstances as your source

  
  

A Consequence of Separation; The need for Mercy

(God is merciful to the fallen) 

 20  And Adam called his wife’s name Eve,[g] because she was the mother of all living. 21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

• In spite of error God doesn’t abandon Man

• God through mercy can retain relationship with Man

• Embrace God’s Mercy , Grace and Compassion. No one in the fallen world is perfect but everyone can benefit and change through His Love, Grace and Fellowship.

Definition of Sin

The Hebrew word chat·taʼthʹ and the Greek word ha·mar·tiʹa, both translated as "sin," essentially mean "to miss" or "straying from the right path"

• All thought, action, desire that is separate from God’s Conception of what is Good is deemed Sin

Gods Grand Mystery

(salvation through Christ)  

Colossians 1:26-27 26 the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. 27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

• The cure for Sin is Repentance and Reunification to God through the work of Jesus the Christ on the Cross

• The Expression of Christ through you_ We are temples of God Hosting His Mind, His Love and His Will

  
  

MIND

1 Corinthians 2:16 "For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ."

Philippians 2:5 "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus"

Rom: 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

LOVE

Mat 22:37-39 37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

The phrase "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength" means to dedicate your entire being to God, encompassing your emotions, spiritual life, intellect, and physical actions.

1 John 18-19 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love [a]Him because He first loved us.

WILL

Ephesians 2:10 "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

Colossians 1:16 "For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him."

Declarative Prayer:

• We Declare that we will build our connection to God

• We Declare that we will know Him through His Word

• We Declare that we will Know Him through Prayer

• We Declare that we will Serve Him with our Lives and Substance

JOINT HEIRS IN CHRIST

Equal in God

• First of all we are all equal in Christ (having accepted the salvation of Jesus Christ) – we start with the same potential for holiness – no man or woman in God can excluded

• Office is not Value- Race, Former Religion, or Sex no longer segregates anyone. In God we may carry different roles or office but we have the same value

Galatians 3:28 KJV There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:28 AMP There is [now no distinction in regard to salvation] neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you [who believe] are all one in Christ Jesus [no one can claim a spiritual superiority].

1 Peter 3:7 AMP In the same way, you husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way [with great gentleness and tact, and with an intelligent regard for the marriage relationship], as with [a]someone physically weaker, since she is a woman. Show her honor and respect as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered or ineffective.

• Women are worthy of honor and respect.

• Women are fellow heirs to the kingdom.

• To dishonour women would hinder your prayers

AN EXAMPLE OF DIVINE WOMANHOOD

Who was Jocebed?

Exodus 6:20 20 And Amram took him Jochebed his father's sister to wife; and she bare him Aaron and Moses: and the years of the life of Amram were an hundred and thirty and seven years.

Numbers 26:59 59 And the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, whom her mother bare to Levi in Egypt: and she bare unto Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister.

• Mother of Miriam, Aaron and Moses

• Daughter of Levi married to a Levite- Priesthood

What are The Mother’s Traits of Jocebed?

Exodus 2:1-10 1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. 2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.

STRENGTH

• Love engendered strength to defy Pharoah’s command.

• She resisted the evil command to have her son murdered

3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink. 4 And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.

STRATEGY

• Resourceful - she could no longer hide him in her house so she found another way to secure his well being

5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. 6 And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children. 7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?

WISDOM

• the insight to know what to do when an opportunity a rises

• the daughter whether coached by her mother or not showed insight in what to do that would safeguard her brothers life.

8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother. 9 And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the women took the child and nursed it.

NURTURE

• the ability to give life and sustenance to something or one

• she was able to care for and encourage the growth and development of her son.

10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.

SACRIFICE

• the ability to give up something you want for yourself so that a great good could be achieved

• no true mother would wish to give up her child, but the ability to do so for the child’s best interest requires a sacrificial nature.

  
  

How can women show God Glory?

1. Reverence for God – recognize the supremacy of God’s purpose above your own

2. Character – develop inner godly qualities – fruit of the spirit

3. Conduct - present & demonstrate behavior that is commendable

4. Expression of Virtue – Show honest care thought, word, deed and prayer

A REVERENCE FOR GOD

Worthy of Praise

Proverbs 31:30 – AMP Charm and grace are deceptive, and [superficial] beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord [reverently worshiping, obeying, serving, and trusting Him with awe-filled respect], she shall be praised.

Proverbs 31:30 – KJV Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

Peter 3:3-4 AMP Your adornment must not be merely external with interweaving and elaborate knotting of the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or [being superficially preoccupied with] dressing in expensive clothes; 4 but let it be [the inner beauty of] the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, [one that is calm and self-controlled, not over anxious, but serene and spiritually mature] which is very precious in the sight of God.

Peter 3:3-4 KJV Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

How do women and mothers then become most valuable to God?

Something or someone becomes valuable to you when it can do something in a way that nothing or no-one else can quite master in the same way. The price and value then shoots up.

To mother as a verb has more breadth and meaning than the limited use of mother as a noun.

The Oxford dictionary says “to mother” is to:

• Bring up (often a child) with care and affection.

• Look after (someone) kindly and protectively (sometimes excessively so)

• To give birth to

  
  

A mother protects, disciplines, befriends, loves, is selfless, strives, equips one with knowledge, skills and abilities. This often relates to a child but the heart of a true mother embraces the vulnerable. For example Mother Theresa was so named for the depth of compassion shown to the young and the elderly alike.

What is it then that women, those who choose to demonstrate their mothering gifts have” In everything God has a key purpose – to draw others to Him.

God instills a woman with the invaluable ability to create, and influence others toward His love and to find ways and strength within herself, using the special giftings intentionally geared toward His specific purpose

CHARACTER & CONDUCT

A Route to Influence

Women must not be defined by outward appearance only

Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

• Virtuous implies value, having moral excellence in character is worthwhile

Titus 2:3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things

• Holiness, Purity / morally upright

• Encouraging, tender-hearted, (not spiteful, gossiping, given to excess)

• Self-controlled

  
  

Titus 2:3-4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

 The ability to guide and nurture

 Loving to family/ husband, kind, agreeable, pure

Why does character and conduct matter so much?

Conduct impacts influence

• Influence - Your ability to influence and shape the development and experiences of many aspects of life can be positive or negative.

  
  

• This determines whether people will be drawn to Christ through you or turned away by you.

Who can you influence?

• The vulnerable or weak amongst us

• Those you meet who need and depend on your loving care and direction

• Family members and spouses

1. Jesus life was shaped by a mother so he made provision on her behalf

• Told men to do what he said – turned water into wine

• Pondered his actions when found in the temple

• Stayed with him from the cross to the tomb

  
  

2. Paul highlights the influence of Lois and Eunice on young Timothy’s life

2 Timothy:1-5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

• Women are instrumental in instilling faith and character in children and spouses

  
  

3. Moses mother kept him & hid him in the river- Discernment, wisdom protection

4. Syrian Phoenician woman withstood ridicule to get help for her daughter

5. Prostitute Rahab hid the spies to save her family

To fulfil God purpose and to experience the true value He places on motherhood you must:

1. Give God your heart and become an heir in Christ

2. Build and demonstrate wholesome character

3. Guard your conduct

4. Give of your love

And, by the out-working of these qualities, the unique care of a mother’s heart will be fully demonstrated and lived out through your life…. a life that will succor and draw souls through you care and lovingkindness and bring honor to the kingdom of God.

the fight is not against flesh and blood

EXPRESSION OF VIRTUE

A Route to Influence

PROVERBS 31 Lists many of these Esteemed qualities and Giftings endowed to women and mothers that draw people in their care even closer, showing forth God:

Trustworthiness:

v11-12 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. 12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

Productivity:

v 13-14 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

Taking Responsibility & supporting others:

v15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

A thoughtful / Discerning businesswoman or entrepreneur

v16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

Intentional improving, strengthening and expanding herself

v17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

Recognizes value in things and presses on to a goal & Sacrifices

v18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

Hardworking

v 19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

Charitable

v 20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

As a result she becomes valuable, not only naturally but spiritually

Value

Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

Value that is recognized at the highest level –

v 28-29 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

Honor

v31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Any woman within her circumstances, abilities can chosen purpose; can be all or none of the above. Each one must work out her own salvation -

Philippians 2-12 KJV Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
